The theater season 2014-2015 was very rich in new productions. Musical theaters gave their audience a lot of decent performances. Four performances attracted the most attention: The Bolshoi’s History of Kai and Gerda, the Up & Down St. Petersburg State Academic Ballet Theater of Boris Eifman, the Jekyll and Hyde Theaters of the St. Petersburg Musical Comedy and the Golden Cockerel of the Mariinsky Theater .
"History of Kai and Gerda"
The premiere of this opera for children was held in November 2014. The author of the music is the modern composer Sergey Banevich, who began his career in the 60s of the 20th century.
The opera, which tells the touching story of Gerda and Kai, was written in 1979 and has been on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater for many years. In the Bolshoi Theater in 2014, the play was staged for the first time. The director of the performance was Dmitry Belyanushkin, who only 2 years ago graduated from GITIS, but already managed to win the international competition among directors.
"Up & Down"
The premiere of 2015. This is a ballet composed by Boris Eifman based on the novel "The Night is Tender" by F.S. Fitzgerald, whose action unfolds to the music of Franz Schubert, George Gershwin and Alban Berg.
In the center of the plot is a young talented doctor who is trying to realize his gift and make a career, but it turns out to be a difficult task in a world dominated by money and dark instincts. Wicked quagmire absorbs him, he forgets about his important mission, destroys his talent, loses everything that he had and becomes an outcast.
The disintegration of the hero's consciousness is depicted in the play with the help of an original plastic, all nightmares and mania of this person and those around him are extracted to the surface. The choreographer himself calls his performance a ballet-psychological epic, which is designed to show what the consequences are when a person betrays himself.
"Jekyll and Hyde"
The premiere of 2014. The performance is based on the novel by R. Stevenson. The musical "Jekyll and Hyde" is recognized as one of the best in its genre. The director of the production is Miklos Gabor Kereny, who is known to the world by the pseudonym Kero. The actors who won the Golden Mask National Theater Award - Ivan Ozhogin (the role of Jekyll / Hyde), Manana Gogitidze (the role of Lady Baconsfield) are busy in the musical.
The protagonist of the play - Dr. Jekyll fights for his idea, he believes that the negative and positive traits in a person can be separated by scientific means in order to do away with evil. To test the theory, he needs an experimental one, but the board of trustees of the clinic for the mentally ill refuses to provide the patient for the experiments, and then he uses himself as an experimental subject. As a result of the experiment, he has a split personality. During the day he is a brilliant doctor, and at night - the ruthless killer Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll’s experiment ends in failure; he is convinced from his own experience that evil is invincible. The musical was written by Steve Caden and Frank Wildhorn in 1989.
"The Golden Cockerel"
Premiere of 2015 on the new stage of the Mariinsky Theater. This is a three-act opera-fiction, based on the tale of A.S. Pushkin, to the music by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. The director of the play, as well as the production designer and costume designer in one person, Anna Mathison, who shot a number of performances of the Mariinsky Theater in the form of a film opera.
For the first time, the opera "The Golden Cockerel" was staged at the Mariinsky Theater in 1919, and in this theatrical season its triumphal return took place. Valery Gergiev explains his decision to return to the stage of the theater, which he directs, precisely this opera by the fact that it is consonant with our time.
Shemakha Tsarina personifies a destructive temptation, which is very difficult, and sometimes impossible to resist, which leads to life problems. In the new formulation of the opera "The Golden Cockerel" there is a lot of animation and live-action cinema, for example, the Kingdom of Shamakhi is shown using elements of a neon show.
